The government is targeting next year's public transport which it has been converted from fuel oil to gas. To that end, the government is developing infrastructure of gas fuel.
"Our target in 2011, three cities are able to use gas fuel," said Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of Saleh Zahedy Darwin after hearing a member of the National Energy Board in Jakarta, Friday (30 / 7). The three cities in question are Jakarta, Surabaya, and Medan.
The government felt the need to reposition the related state-owned enterprises of national energy supply, among others, PT PLN, PT Perusahaan Gas Negara, Pertamina, and PT Tambang Batu Bara Bukit Asam. No less importantly, it is ensuring the availability of funds for such infrastructure development.
Darwin hoped that fuel gas can be immediately used by the means of transportation, especially public transport. "The problem constraints gas infrastructure in the cities," he said.
Gas infrastructure that it is needed among other container terminals of natural gas (LNG receiving terminal), pipeline transportation, gas refueling stations (SPBG), and gas infrastructure of the city. The involvement of private parties would be required in this regard.
Energy Council member, Daniel Herman, said that the company has repeatedly met with government, businesses, and Organda (public transport Association)related to the use of gas. According to him, in the near future, fuel gas firstly used by taxis and buses. "I used to have, but to no avail," he said.
In the Energy Council meeting, it also discussed other proposals related to the use of alternative energy for transportation sector, including the development of electric cars that use wind energy, solar, and nuclear which produces lower emissions than fuel oil, and use of energy-efficient vehicles.
