Swedish car brand, Volvo announced that they are developing a new luxury car. This car was made to be a rival to the German trio of Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series and Audi A8.
Volvo Chairman Li Shufu announced that the new model will likely be built on the platform Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) which is also used to build the next generation of the S80.
The possibility of this car will be named by the S100 and will be larger and more luxurious than the S80 or S80L though.
In China, it is likely the car will be built at the Volvo factory in Chengdu, but Li, who is also the chairman of Geely said that they have not decided whether to export cars to other markets or not. He was also silent about the possibility of the machine to be grafted into this car.
Could be, the machine that will be used is a new engine. Because some time ago Volvo has just introduced a family of four-cylinder engine, named the 'Drive-E' after intending to get rid of 6 and 8 cylinder engines.
But Li's plan revealed in direct conflict with statements made by the President and CEO of Volvo Hakan Samuelsson in April when he insisted that this brand does not have a plan to build a luxury sedab unattractive as a target for Volvo.
"We do not have the ambition to enter the segment in which we will compete with vehicles that have a V8 or V12 engines. We do not believe it would fit with our brand image," he said.
Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd itself is currently the owner of the Volvo brand. They bought Volvo from Ford in 2010.
