Now the need for more environmentally friendly cars has forced car manufacturers to look once again at them. For the past decade electric car battery designers and manufacturers have been working to create an electric car battery that could run both a car's electrical system and be the sole source of fuel. Here are the types that are in use today:
Deep Cell Lead Acid Batteries
Lead acid batteries are the oldest type of batteries in use today. It is only natural considering their many uses that these batteries would be the first choice to be used for electric vehicles. Deep cell lead acid batteries can and do power electric cars and you can drive 80 miles before needing a recharge. While 80 miles of travel on one charge may not seem like much, when you consider that the batteries in 19th century cars were good for maybe 12 to 20 miles under most conditions, then you can see how far they have come.
Lithium Ion Batteries
Lithium ion electric vehicle batteries are coming into their own. These batteries are able to go 220 miles or about the same distance as an average fill up of petrol on one charge making them the favourite among electric car manufacturers. These batteries have made it possible for people to own electric vehicles for driving short distances, which is good for the environment. What's more, some of these batteries recharge in as little as three hours.
Wave of the Future
However, the battery designers and manufacturers haven't stopped there, they are determined to make these types of cars affordable and functional to the masses as soon as possible. They continue working on Lithium ion batteries to make them more powerful and weigh less while also working to shorten the recharge time needed to get them recharged and get you on your way. This makes it possible for these batteries to power cars for long distance driving while only needing periodic recharges that will not take much longer than filling petrol in today's cars.
Close to a breakthrough on shortening recharge time, electric car and battery manufacturers are working with traditional petrol stations and even hotels on setting up charging stations that will allow you to stop and recharge your battery just as you would fill your petrol tank.
For now those who use these cars for short distance driving recharge at home and look forward to the day when they can take their first road trip fuelled by their electric car battery.
Many observers think the furthest distance materialized for the most frequently thought of is to make a massive sized battery. Unfortunately it would be inefficient.
Now how that is done by Audi, Lekker, and DBM Energy is changing the type of battery used. Usually electric cars often use Li-Ion battery type, but the Audi A2 Lekker using lithium metal polymer ultra-light.
According to Mirko Hanneman this battery is better than conventional batteries of electric cars available today.
Battery technology is called hummingbirds AlphaPolymer. Unlike the current battery, battery used Audi A2 Lekker actually have an efficiency of 97 percent.
Foreign normally again, to recharge this battery just needs time for 6 minutes. While several other electric car used traditional Li-Ion battery.
The ability of the battery as this is beyond doubt. It's just one drawback is charging a very long time. So do not be surprised if these batteries still require a lot of research to enhance the abilities.
Obvious example is the Mitsubishi I-MiEV. This car has the uncanny ability to mileage. This car is proved to be sold out in demand in some countries. It's just that this car requires a fairly long charging time.
What achieved by the Audi A2 Lekker deserves positive appreciated. At least barriers low mileage and type of batteries that are less good at least to some critics' queries can be refuted.
